Machine Description The California Bearing Ratio (CBR) Test Apparatus is designed for determining the relative bearing ratio and expansion characteristics of base, sub-base, and subgrade soils under known surcharge weights for the design of roads, pavements, and runways.

The CBR test is an empirical method originally developed in California, USA and is widely used for material selection and subgrade quality control in highway engineering applications.

The test can be conducted both in laboratory conditions on prepared soil specimens as well as in-situ at site locations.

Since the test is empirical in nature, it is specifically applicable for highway and pavement thickness design purposes.
