| Application | The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is a widely used field test for measuring the penetration resistance of soil and evaluating the engineering properties of subsoil conditions.
The test is useful for determining the degree of compactness of cohesionless soils and the consistency of cohesive soils. SPT is also widely adopted for assessing soil strength characteristics and evaluating resistance against liquefaction caused by earthquakes or other dynamic ground vibrations. |
| Test Procedure | The Standard Penetration Resistance is measured as the number of blows (N-value) required to drive a split spoon sampler to a depth of 300 mm into the soil.
The sampler is driven using a 65 kg hammer freely falling through a height of 750 mm. |
